I need information about my ideas

Research

There are many ways of investigating a career idea but it's important that you have done some background reading about what's involved in your chosen career. If you have an idea in mind it may be that you have already looked into this in some detail- or you may have just the beginnings of an idea and need to know more about what's involved. Begin by looking at general information about what skills and qualities are needed, work environment, hours, starting salary and any specific qualifications you might require before being considered by an employer.

Use the A-Z Careers to find out lots of useful information about your ideas. To research the local Labour Market you can use Local Labour Market Facts.

Self awareness

Once you have the background knowledge you need, think about your own skills, qualities, qualifications and  preferences and compare these to what is required in your area of interest. As an adult, your decision may be influenced much more by personal circumstances  There are ways of helping you with your own self awareness and a discussion with a Careers Adviser would help you with this aspect of your research.

Investigate

Once you have confirmed that your idea is realistic, try and find out more. If you have contacts in the industry such as family or friends, ask them about the things they do at work and for an honest opinion about how they feel about their job. If you don't know anyone in the industry, try contacting the HR Department of a company in this field. They may be able to arrange for you to meet someone to talk about a particular career.  It may be possible for you to arrange some work experience in order to get a first hand look at what goes on. The Careers Show is held once a year and is also an opportunity for you to talk about your interests with relevant professionals.

Make an informed decision

Once you have all the information you need, you should be able to make a balanced and informed decision. If you still feel you need to talk things through before making a final decision, you can speak to one of the Careers Advisers at Careers Guernsey.
