I need information about my chosen career

Research

There are many ways of investigating a career idea but it's important that you have done some background reading about what's involved in your chosen career. If you have an idea in mind it may be that you have already looked into this in some detail- or you may have just the beginnings of an idea and need to know more about what's involved. Begin by looking at general information about what skills and qualities are needed, work environment, hours, starting salary and any specific qualifications you might require before being considered by an employer.

You can begin to explore your ideas through the Explore Careers section of our website. You can also use the A-Z Careers to help further research any ideas you have. Using our website can then help focus your ideas and check any opportunities on the island for learning, training and employment.

Be aware that opportunities may well be different in Guernsey and you should also research the local Labour Market to check the levels of employment in this area by looking at Local Labour Market Facts and Career sectors in Guernsey.

Self awareness

Once you have the background knowledge you need, think about your own skills, qualities, qualifications and  preferences and compare these to what is required in your area of interest. As an adult, your decision may be influenced much more by personal circumstances  There are ways of helping you with your own self awareness and a discussion with a Careers Adviser would help you with this aspect of your research.

Investigate

Once you have confirmed that your idea is realistic, try and find out more. If you have contacts in the industry such as family or friends, ask them about the things they do at work and for an honest opinion about how they feel about their job. If you don't know anyone in the industry, try contacting the HR Department of a company in this field. They may be able to arrange for you to meet someone to talk about a particular career.  It may be possible for you to arrange some work experience in order to get a first hand look at what goes on. The Careers Show is held once a year and is also an opportunity for you to talk about your interests with relevant professionals. Keep an eye on our website for details of the next event and to access information about local companies.

Make an informed decision
