KUDOS This link opens in a new browser windowHow do I decide what to do?

You can use KUDOS to help you check your interests and subjects and which job ideas might suit you.

Use your log-in you were given by your Careers Teacher to use KUDOS.

Using WEXBOX to choose

You will use WEXBOX to choose your work experience as this helps you find out more about the different employers and placements in the island. You can search for areas of work or particular employers and read the job descriptions to find out what you will be doing when you go out on a placement.

Remember to check:

  • your transport and how you will get there each day
  • minimum age as some employers state you have to be over 16 years of age
  • your career ideas and using work experience to help you find out more
  • health and safety requirements and if you would be able to do the job - health conditions can affect your choice of placement

WEXBOX is a complete listing of placements so you still have to fill out a selection form so that your choices are narrowed down.

Complete a selection form

You will complete a selection form at school and you will normally choose up to 6 placements. You will fill in the subjects you are studying and the reasons why you have made your choices and your career ideas. Your tutor is also asked to comment on areas such as your IT Skills, Maturity, Team Working, Communication Skills as this helps place you with the right employer.

What happens next?

Once you have completed and signed your form, this will be sent to the GWEx (Guernsey Work Experience) staff at Careers Guernsey so that they can contact employers linked with your choices, to find a placement for you.

Once a placement is confirmed, you will receive a Student Pack at school which includes a job description, health and safety information and a work experience diary. Your parents have to sign the Parent Agreement form in this pack and return it to the school before your placement starts.

Before the placement starts

You need to read the job description in your Student Pack and check:

  • Do you need to arrange an interview with the employer before you start? Most employers will like to meet you before the first day and it is helpful for you to find out where you need to go.
  • Do you need to pick up any steel toe capped safety boots from the GWEx office before your placement? If you need safety boots, it will say in the job description under the health and safety. You can borrow safety boots by paying a £10 deposit which will be given back once you have returned your boots and the placement has finished.
  • Work out your transport to get there on time and how to get home at the end of the day.

Enjoy your placement!

  • You are most likely going to work a longer day than when you are at school but this helps you get a good insight into what it will be like going out to work
  • There will be new people you will be introduced to and you should have one person who you report to and looks after you
  • Getting to your placement on time is important so this will teach you punctuality and independence
  • You may feel a bit nervous on your first day but the staff will help make you feel welcome
  • You may have to watch a lot of work being done at first, but then you should be given some tasks to do
  • Hopefully, it will be interesting and you can find out about what it is like to work in that area
  • Be friendly and polite, offer to help and always ask if you are not sure what you should be doing

Whether you loved it or decided it wasn't what you want to do when you leave school you will have learned lots of new skills, met new people, found that what you have learned in school lessons is relevant and helped you to do things in the workplace and will have boosted your self-confidence.
