Where do I look for a job?

Looking for work

If you're looking for a job but don't know where to start, then the information here will help you to identify where to look.

States of Guernsey supported

The Job Centre website holds local vacancies and it is possible to search in a range of categories. If you are registered as unemployed, you should be able to get extra support from Job Centre staff if you need it.

For information about jobs within the States of Guernsey itself, follow the 'Working for your Island' link in this section. There are a range of careers covered including Police, Education, Health and Civil Service jobs.

Careers Guernsey has its own Job Vacancy section and although this is in the main aimed at those recently leaving education there are occasionally vacancies suitable for others held. Check the section out here

Local media and websites

The Guernsey Press publishes jobs on a daily basis and it's worth checking this every day. If you miss a day, you can search for jobs online although not all may be listed. There are a few other local sites which offer job searches, but in the main these will be linked to recruitment agencies and often each site will hold a certain amount of duplicate jobs.

Recruitment Agencies

Recruitment Agencies can be a useful aid to finding work, particularly if you have experience or qualifications that are in demand. If you are considering using the services of an agency, it's worthwhile speaking to two or three different ones and checking which employment sectors they deal with and whether they have employment opportunities at a level that matches with your skills and experience.

Other ways of job hunting

Many jobs in Guernsey still don't get advertised. Often 'word of mouth' from friends or family can lead to finding out about a vacancy before it gets advertised. The other way of catching a vacancy early is by sending a speculative CV and letter to companies who may be able to offer what you are looking for. If you are going to do this, try and find out some information about the organisations first and get the name of a contact in HR so that you personalise things a little bit more.

If you are in need of more support with your job hunting, a Careers Adviser can give you help on an individual basis.
